Second Life: Mzazi Bonetto

Wanting to peer and glimpse the future of human interaction, I have signed onto second life

My Avatar is Mzazi Bonetto. THis virtual world reminds me of the Krucible environment.

I think a lot of pupils are already familiar with the concept of virtual worlds through their use of gaming.

Could this be where gaming meets education? Anyhow i am going to sign up for a  basic account perhaps

$6 a month. There is is an iniatal learning curve (tutorials to follow).  When I saw the programme on virtual

worlds they spoke to real life participants; there was a  married couple who met in second life, there was the

real estate seller who trades and makes a living in second life. There was also the furniture maker who

. They interviewed Rebok and the way in which second lifers could sample trainers and have them made in real life.

For my part as an educator I am naturally interested in the possibilities for education: A virtual schools, lessons in science?

I will post updates on my progress as Mzazi Bonetto.

I’m about to complete my PGCE in MFL and am intrigued about the possiblities of Second Life in language teaching. (I’ve already found the Second Life French langugage site). But I’m afraid that if I sign up I’ll be ever-more addicted to the computer! How have you found it so far, and can you sign up free in the first instance?

    Hi Janet
It really feels quite strange moving about in that virtual world. yes you can sign up for a free account. The way you can tell the free account holders from the paid up ones is the appearance of the avatars. The free account holders appear to be plain with no distinguishing features. The paid up ones are very distinct and colourful. what excites me is the possibilities. I am old enough to remember the time when the internet first started to take off in the 90s to now where if you are under 20 it might be hard to imagine a world without the internet. That said some experts feel that the next evolution of the internet are the virtual worlds such as second life. if so then nows the time to get in on the ground floor. by the way my avatar is called Mzazi Bonetto!
