Science SATs day

This year’s Science SATs day is on the 8 th May. Another round of testing!

Book review where wizards stay up late

‘where wizards stay up late ‘ was written in 1998. It was one of the text books on the then ground breaking open university course ‘ You , your computer and the internet. That was in 2000. Even then the OU had a smooth managed learning environment called ‘FirstClass’ – I have digressed.

I was prompted to re-read this book because of the talk about Web 2. It is considered the definitive story of the how the internet started. Once you understand how the internet started and the basis of how it generally operates then my own opinion about web 2 is more about an attempt to re-classify web 1. might as well talk about Earth 2 or Universe 2.

‘ If you wanted to know who put the @ in your email address, then where wizards stay up late is the book for you.

Anyway worth a look. perhaps in amazon. see the reviews

Krucible

The Krucuble meeting at the CLC with Chris , Judy and the Krucible sales manager has led to the idea of setting up a day or half day for ICT in science. At this session we will take teachers though sample lessons around the topic of FORCE , ENERGY , WAVES and HOvercraft. I thought the waves was very good.

My NPCS project.

Since my previous post on this topic: The cannabis question (OCR, science in the news). I have since collected material on both sides of the coin. website, stuff from Google video, pictures. what I have to do is to compile the material usingh the various Mac & PC tools so that it can be loadeded on to the school’s IT network.

In many ways what I would be working towards is a part internet search m, rather than the teachers idea of simply sitting the pupils in front of the ‘internet to do searchs which might not be the best use of time.  Any way I am in the school on monday and so I might be able to do a taster podcast for the teachers ( this week end)

why blog?

Why am I blogging? Blogging has become very popular and a vital part of the internet. My blog reflects my own preferences for the type of blogs I prefer to read. Bloggers can be very influence in todays media; in previous times news information flowed from publisher to readers/ viewers or listeners but now bloggers are sometimes influential in how the news or information is presented. Bloggers provide feedback or opinions that would not have mattered in the past but nowadays public views reflected in blogs are closely viewed by opinion makers. I think blogging can have implications for education. Say for instance the pupils of a class of year 9 pupils  had been learbning about gravity and were encouraged to complete blogs during the time they studied the tiopic, it would be quite interesting to see what sort of issues might emerge. The teacher might have to deal with some direct feedback that might be hard to take but at the same time would gain a glimpse into the thinking of pupils in a way that is not common in education. teachers do not really know the views and thoughts of pupils they teach.

Checklist of work to be completed

MatthewHensonStrip FINAL 18 04 07 The check list (on fronter) reminding us of the the tasks to be completed is very useful. I can check off or plan my ongoing work. I think this is quite important for the transformation teacher; certainly it is for me. I can see how all that is available can become too much. Therefore having a reminder is great.
